MarDiM Project (Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster Mitigation in the Marmara Region and Disaster Education in Turkey)

2016 2_Mega Disasters and Disaster Information Workshop @Nagoya University, Japan

 An international “Workshop and Symposium on disaster Information Literacy-Risk Communication between the Media and Disaster Research Institutes” was held at Nagoya University in Nagoya, Japan, on 26th February, 2016.


This special symposium took place with the sponsorship of JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) and participants from Turkey, Indonesia, Chile and Japan were gathered to share lessons learned through past catastrophic disasters. The participants discussed on how to improve risk communication preparation for future possible disasters.

The participants from Turkey were as follows; 
-  Prof.Dr. Mikdat Kadioğlu (ITU)
-  Assoc.Prof.Dr. Gülüm TANIRCAN (KOERI)
-  Eng.Seyhun PÜSKÜLCÜ (KOERI)
-  Mr. Bunyamin SÜRMELI (CNN Türk)
-  Mr. Barış Özcan (CNN Türk)
During the symposium, Dr. Gülüm Tanırcan gave a speech on the KOERI’s outreach activities including MarDiM project outputs. Participants from academic area and media have discussed how media members are informed about new scientific studies. Specific examples were given from participating countries. After the workshop, a panel discussion was held. Dr. Tanırcan also attended as a panelist. In the panel discussion following topics were discussed:


- Introduction to country activities
- Changes of activities/methods/contents before/after natural disasters in each country (1999 Kocaeli, 2004 Indonesia 1995 Kobe and 2011 Sendai)
- Issues and future directions in risk communication between media and researchers
- Securely, correctly and clearly communicating information for preparedness and disaster mitigation.Example: Nagoya.
